Melon’s art is deeply rooted in connection and community. Born and raised in Chicago’s Humboldt Park neighborhood, he discovered graffiti as both an escape and a means of self-expression. Hopping trains and immersing himself in the city’s diverse art scene, he found inspiration beyond his block. Graffiti became his way out of the gang life that surrounded him, offering a creative outlet and a sense of purpose.

From navigating the fringes of the law to painting city-commissioned murals, Melon’s artistic journey has been one of transformation. After years of gang involvement and multiple run-ins with the law between 1991 and early 2000, he made a life-altering decision to join the U.S. Navy on September 6, 2001. Stationed in Hawai‘i, he embedded himself in the local graffiti, hip hop and urban art scene, allowing his style to evolve and flourish.

Today, Melon’s bold, striking colors can be found on walls in Hawai‘i, Chicago, Japan, and beyond. His unique aesthetic is shaped by his surroundings and his love for letterforms. “I truly enjoy the graffiti process,” he says. “Especially letters—I feel like a modern-day typographer, breaking down words and balancing each letter to create visual harmony.” As he expands on graffiti, tattooing and fine art, he draws inspiration from his relationships, both brief and proven with time. “My work isn’t just about me,” he explains. “It’s a reflection of everyone around me—a shared story for anyone to see themselves in”

Melon has collaborated with globally renowned artists, including contributing to Kamea Hadar’s 13-story mural of Duke Kahanamoku and Carissa Moore. Passionate about supporting both established and emerging artists, he co-founded the Gangway Gallery and art supply shop in Honolulu. The space has featured works by Jasper Wong, Barry McGee, Persue, OG Slick, and more. Including a comprehensive exhibition of Chuck Jones’ work, further cementing Melon’s role in bridging artists and community.
